Privacy notice

This is a small personal site. It does not run advertising, it does not build profiles, and it does not sell anything to anybody. The only information it collects is what you type into the contact form yourself.
Who is responsible
This site, theflagexpert.com, is run by Michael Green, a vexillologist based in Indianapolis, Indiana, United States. For anything in this notice, including a request to see or delete your information, contact the contact form or email contact@flagsforgood.com.
What is collected
Only the contact form collects anything. When you send it, these are submitted:
- Your name
- Your email address
- The subject you picked from the dropdown
- Your message
- If you chose podcast booking: the show name and link, the format, and rough timing
- Which part of the page you opened the form from, which is used only to route the reply sensibly
Nothing else is gathered. There is no account to create, no newsletter signup, and no tracking pixel.
Why, and on what basis
The information is used for one thing: to read your message and reply to it. Under the UK and EU GDPR the basis for this is legitimate interests, specifically responding to someone who has deliberately asked to be contacted, and where the enquiry is about booking or engaging services, steps taken at your request before entering a contract.
Who else sees it
- Netlify hosts this site and processes the contact form. Submissions are stored in Netlify's system so they can be delivered. Netlify also keeps standard server logs, which include visitor IP addresses.
- YouTube is contacted in two situations: video thumbnails load from YouTube's image servers when you scroll to them, and if you actually play a video, an embedded player loads. The player uses YouTube's no-cookie domain, which means Google does not set tracking cookies unless and until you press play.
Your message is not shared with anyone else, and it is never sold or handed to advertisers.
Cookies
This site sets no cookies of its own. No analytics, no advertising tags, no tracking. Fonts are served from this site rather than from Google, so no request goes to Google to display the page. The only cookies that can appear are the ones YouTube sets if you choose to play an embedded video.
How long it is kept
Contact form submissions are kept for as long as they are useful for the conversation and any follow-up work, and are reviewed periodically. If you would like your message deleted sooner, just ask and it will be.
Your rights
Depending on where you live, you may have the right to ask for a copy of the information held about you, to have it corrected, to have it deleted, to object to it being used, or to receive it in a portable format. To exercise any of these, get in touch using the details above. There is no charge and no need to give a reason.
If you are in the UK or the EU and you are unhappy with the response, you can complain to your national data protection authority. In the UK that is the Information Commissioner's Office.
Children
This site is aimed at journalists, producers, event organisers and other professionals. It is not directed at children, and information is not knowingly collected from anyone under 16.
International visitors
The site is hosted in the United States. If you contact Michael from outside the US, your message is transferred to and stored in the US.
Changes
If this notice changes, the date at the top changes with it. If analytics or any other tracking is ever added, this notice will be updated before it goes live.
